Shelly – First impression

A couple of months ago I bought my first Shelly 1 and used it for a normal light switch to make it smart. Very simple installation and easy to use. But for the first time I was a bit surprised. To use the device I needed to register myself to the Shelly cloud. I’ve heard that they are not so secure. Maybe not so tricky when I’m thinking, it’s just for a normal light bulb. Ok, I’ve done that step.
Next one: HomeKit

Due to the fact that I would like to use that device in my HomeKit environment I had to do some steps because the Shelly relays are by default not HomeKit ready. So I installed a Shelly plugin to my Homebridge server. It works ok but not as good as I expected.

After a while I found this helpful page on Github where a native HomeKit firmware for nearly every Shelly is available. The only thing you need to do is to perform a firmware update. By the way, the Shelly should be already in your Wifi and you have of course connection to that.

After the update you can setup a HomeKit server for about 5-6 devices and add your Shelly’s to that. The next step is then to add the specific HomeKit Code to your environment and all functionalities are with you 🙂

Job done.
